I use a loop like this for my dwm, in my sessionstarter script:

xsetroot -solid "LightSkyBlue4"
while ! ( statusbar ) | /home/viric/bin/dwm; do echo dwm restarted ; done
exit -1 # Because the session script in my home is called in a while loop.
