As you know GCC is the dependency of about all of Nixpkgs.  To me it
makes a lot of sense to spend an effort having the core development
tools well tested by default.

Indeed, I wasn’t aware of that.  I guess static linking is the only
option, right?

I’d think otherwise, but I guess you’re more likely to get a
constructive discussion at gcc at gcc.gnu.org.
